A New Year

by Daley

Hello, 2018.

Jean Philippe and I just got back from visiting family in the US this Christmas vacation.

We’re still settling back in Bordeaux and I can’t believe the break is already almost over and that I’m no longer in Oregon with family!

(Side note: while I am a California girl–lived there from age 5-21, my family now lives in Oregon, so that’s where I visit when I go to the United States).

Don’t get me wrong, I love my life in France, but sometimes it can be really hard to be so far away from my family and these past few weeks are exactly what I needed to pick myself up from those expat blues.

The wonderful thing about working in France is that vacation is taken very seriously by employers and employees alike (you legally have the right to disconnect and not respond to e-mails, etc. from work), so when there are vacances scolaires, I am in serious vacation mode.

I didn’t even touch my computer the entire break which really allowed me to reconnect with my family.

It also gave me time to reflect on this past year and this upcoming year.

To be perfectly honest, I’ve never been much of a New Year’s Resolutions kind of person. I just don’t really believe in a new year triggering a new person and I’ve never been a fan of the word “resolution.” To me, it sounds more like you’re trying to stop certain vices you have and it doesn’t sound very permanent or positive.

However, this year I have decided to strive for some goals.

I’m not comfortable sharing all of them on social media because as time has gone on I’ve realized I should probably be a bit more private when it comes to certain things going on in my life and how I share it to the world/on my blog.

With that being said, I do know some things I put on this platform actually do help fellow expats/TAPIFERS/study abroad students/etc.

So, one of my goals this year is to at least have one blog post a week.

I’ve posted so infrequently this past year and a lot of that has to do with my perfectionism. I have started to write a post and stop or obsess over some wording because I’m worried about publishing something online that doesn’t flow or sound eloquent.

But, because of that, this blog has really suffered.

Since I’ve had this website, a lot of things in my life have happened that I have loved sharing. I used to focus a lot on my relationship and getting married and while I loved writing those posts, I feel like they didn’t really help anyone.

What I have noticed with my reader engagement is a lot of interest in the administrative aspects when it comes to living in France.

I’m not an expert at all, but I can speak to my own personal experience as an American expat in France.

I think I’m going to switch posts up a bit–some will focus on administrative aspects while others might be a travel post or about my work life or trying to get my Master’s Degree in France.

I’m not exactly sure yet, but my main goal will just be to write.

So, tell me, what do you all want to read about?

Let me know in the comments below!

Talk to you soon.

First of all, Happy New Year and all the best to you in 2018
I have followed your blog from the very beginning and just wanted to say that I really enjoy reading your posts and you have wonderful writing style so I am very excited for new entries to come ❤️
Personally, I am also on verge of moving into different country in a long-term and this is one part of your writings I can relate to the most. I have also considered many things you have mentioned (being away from family, expat challenges etc.) so writing about your experience of adopting with new country/lifestyle would be very interesting for me.
Looking forward to new posts to come

Thank you so much for reading and for your comment, Anna! I really appreciate when I receive feedback so you writing on here means a lot.
Which country are you moving to? Good luck to you on your new adventure!
I will definitely keep your words in mind and continue writing about daily expat challenges and living abroad.

I will be moving to Czech Republic starting fromthis summer and although I have a good reason to go – to live with my boyfriend and pursue my professional career – all the changes can be a bit overwhelming nonetheless! 🙂
We actually travel a lot together and Bordeaux has been in our wish list for places to visit for a long time now (we have only been to Paris together so far, from Franch cities) especially after having seen your blogs and pretty pictures from there 😉 <3
so hopefully this year,,

Lots of Love,

Anna, <3 <3

Happy New Year Daley! I loved this post and I just wanted to comment on the part where you said that you felt posting about your relationship and getting married didn’t really help anyone- the truth is it helped me so much! I remember feeling terrified when it came to doing long distance with my boyfriend as I wasn’t sure if things would last. I really needed a place to turn to as I felt no one really understood how I was feeling and this blog was my place :-). The advice you gave me through your posts really gave me hope and it actually turns out that now, 2018 will be our last year of doing long distance before me and him are reunited for good and we start wedding planning! Whoop whoop! I wish you all the best for the new direction your channel is going! From Theresa 🙂 xox
